Seasonal Tips

Autumn

  • If you want to protect your hot water system from possible freezing during power outages then now is the time to add propylene glycol. For  areas of your heating system that are just vulnerable to freezing, glycol may be the best investment you've ever made.
  • Be sure to remove hoses from outside faucets.
  • Your furnace/boiler should be tuned up yearly. If it isn't, change your filter and oil your blower motor or pump.
  • Leave your heat on at 60 degrees if you leave home in the winter. If you have areas where piping might be exposed to cold enough to freeze, properly insulate the pipes.
  • Proper insulation of walls, ceilings, crawl spaces and pipes will save energy and expensive repairs.
  • Check to see that windows are caulked and doors have weather stripping on the bottom.
  • Call us for a heating upgrade with a high efficiency boiler or furnace.
Spring
  • To check your sump pump, work the float and the pump independently. Pumps with integrated switches need a volume of water to start the motor. Make certain the discharge line is free and clear. The discharge should terminate as far from your home as possible. This prevents recycling of the water that is being pumped.
  • When using an outside faucet for the first time, check the wall or ceiling where it is connected. If the pipe froze and broke during the winter, you will have flooding.
  • For flooding problems in a basement or crawl space, make sure your sump pump is operating properly!
  • Identify your main water shut off. Do all the members of your family know how to shut off the main water valve?
  • If there are no appliances in your home which require a constant water supply, make sure you shut off your water supply when you leave on vacation.
  • If you are not sure where these shut off valves are in your home, please call us and we will be happy to tag them for you.
  • Make sure that all debris is removed from around your condensing unit.
Note: Your air conditioning system will run more efficiently, last longer and hold up to extreme temperatures better if it is tuned up each year.

Note: New EPA regulations are very strict regarding refrigerant leaks on air conditioning units. In order to meet federal, state, and local laws, we will conduct a leak detection test to make sure your system is not polluting the atmosphere.
